| Instructions
for your Sleep Study
(Print this page
to use as a checklist for the day of your study)
On the day
of your study:
- Avoid caffeine
- Avoid napping
- Take a shower and wash your hair. Do not use
hair conditioner, hair spray or skin lotions because the technician
will need to place small sensors on your head and body with tape
and cream.
- Eat dinner before you come in and pack a snack
if you need one before bedtime.
- Take any medication as usual.
- When you arrive at our building, it will be
locked. Use the phone by the door and tell the operator that you
are going to the third floor for an appointment. When you get
to the third floor ring the doorbell. The technician will let
you in. It may take a few minutes for him to get to the door,
please be patient.
Bring the following with you to your
sleep study:
- Bring your own pillow and blanket.
- You may bring reading materials. There will also be a TV in your room.
- Bring whatever you are comfortable sleeping
in.
- Bring a towel and washcloth if you plan to shower
in the morning. (We have shower facilities on-site.)
- If you take medications before bed or when you
first wake up bring them with you.
What you can expect:
When you arrive for your sleep study, the technician
will take you to your room. You will be asked to change into your
nightclothes. Small sensors will be placed on your head and body
with tape and cream. The sensors are then plugged into a device
that will monitor your sleep. If you need to use the restrooms once
the sensors are plugged in, the technician can unplug the sensors.
A camera in your room will monitor your body movements as part of
the study. The technician will be outside your room the entire night.
You will leave at approximately 6:30 am the following morning.
If you have breathing problems, a Continuous Positive
Airway Pressure (CPAP) device may be used. CPAP is a device that
can help you breathe and improve your sleep. It may be used during
the second half of your sleep study or on another night.
What the sleep study shows:
The sleep study monitors all stages of sleep.
To do this, the following are recorded:
- Eye movements
- Heart rate
- Brain waves
- Muscle activity
- Oxygen level of your blood
- Breathing
- Snoring
- Body movements
Getting your results:
Your doctor will explain the results of your
study at your follow-up visit. It will take a week to ten days for
the results of your test to be evaluated and for the evaluation
to be sent to your doctor. If you have any questions contact our
office and ask for Beverly. She will be happy to help you.
